Catchy title of research: A Comprehensive Survey of Cache-based Transport Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks The main functions of transport layer of the network stack is to guarantee end-to-end reliability and error control.  This means that the network protocol must be able to deliver all packets sent from the source to the intended destination.  In wireless sensor network, these objectives are more difficult to achieve […]

Seminar on Brain-on-a-Chip by physicist Dr. Vincent Daria

Seminar on Brain-on-a-Chip by physicist Dr. Vincent Daria

Abstract We aim to understand the formation and function of brain circuits by growing neurons on nanostructured semiconductor devices (a.k.a. Brain-on-a-chip). We artificially grow brain cells on a semiconductor wafer patterned with nanowire scaffolds. From a fundamental perspective, we aim to investigate the structural significance of nanoscale topographies for guiding neurite outgrowth. To correlate the circuit function on the neurons grown on-a-chip with that of certain areas in the brain, we need to analyze the function of single neurons and population of neurons forming circuits in living mammalian brain slices and that of an intact rodent brain. To achieve this, […]

UP study offers clues to ancient biodiversity, early human movement in Southeast Asia

UP study offers clues to ancient biodiversity, early human movement in Southeast Asia

The prehistoric shell tools uncovered in Mindoro by the team of archaeologists, geologists, ecologists, geneticists and social scientists from the University of the Philippines could point to the start of a transition from hunting/gathering to the agricultural or semi-agricultural subsistence strategies of our ancestors. Since 2012, the team has been working on an ambitious multiyear project funded by the Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Program to answer questions about ancient biodiversity and early human movement in Island Southeast Asia. Using Mindoro as the site of study, they hoped to find not only further clues to how early humans arrived in the Philippine islands […]

UP to work with Balik Scientist microbial genomics expert for research and training

The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) of UP will host Dr. Cheryl P. Andam, an expert on microbial genomics and Assistant Professor of Microbial Ecology at the University of New Hampshire, as Balik Scientist from July to August 2017. Andam is set to collaborate with Dr. Arturo Lluisma of the UP Marine Science Institute on using genomics for antibiotic discovery from soil bacteria, and with Dr. Pierangeli Vital, Dr. Windell Rivera and Dr. Marie Christine Obusan of the UP Institute of Biology and Dr. Ma. Anita Bautista, program director of PGC’s DNA Sequencing & Bioinformatics Facility, on genome sequencing of representative […]

Primo National Institute of Geological Sciences College of Science UP Diliman Evaluating the Potential of Radar-Based Rainfall Estimates for Streamflow and Flood Simulations in the Philippines. Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk, 7 (4): 1390-1405, 2016. This case study evaluates the suitability of radar-based quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) for simulation of streamflow in the Marikina River Basin (MRB), in the Philippines. Hourly radar-based QPEs were produced from reflectivity that had been observed by an S-band radar located about 90 km from the MRB. Radar data processing and precipitation estimation were carried out using the open source library wradlib. […]

UP represents PH in top 250 Asia Pacific universities

UP represents PH in top 250 Asia Pacific universities

The Philippines surfaced in the inaugural Times Higher Education (THE) Asia-Pacific University Rankings as the University of the Philippines (UP) made the top 250. UP is the only Philippine university to place in the rankings. The national university’s inclusion this year also ends the country’s absence from the Asia University Rankings since 2015. The universities from 38 countries in East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania were assessed in terms of teaching (25 percent), research (30 percent), citations (30 percent), international outlook (7.5 percent) and industry income (7.5 percent). These are the same indicators used by the THE in the world rankings, albeit slightly recalibrated […]

System-wide GE Faculty Conference 2017 centers on course design

System-wide GE Faculty Conference 2017 centers on course design

Around 280 faculty members from the eight constituent universities (CUs) of UP will be at Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Batangas until Thursday, 6 July, for the three-day UP System General Education Faculty Conference 2017 organized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The faculty members who represent all academic clusters have been tapped to plan the delivery of the 11 courses developed during the GE mini-conferences and that will be made part of the revised GE program of the CUs as core or elective courses.  They will engage in workshops to review and refine the course design […]

UP hosts PH-UK international workshop on disease control and prevention

The International Workshop on Genomic Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (GEID Philippines 2017) organized by the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) of UP in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) opened yesterday, 4 June 2017, at the Institute of Biology in UP Diliman. The five-day event gives scientists a venue for sharing with colleagues their research projects and some best practices in the understanding of the epidemiology of infectious diseases, as well as learning about advanced tools that can aid in the detection, prevention and control of diseases. Resource speakers from UP, the Philippine Department of Health, Research Institute […]
