UP regains title as one of world’s top 400 universities

The University of the Philippines has reappeared in the top 400 universities in the world.

In the list published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on 6 September, UP placed 374th alongside Aalborg University and the University of Colorado, Denver.

UP has been consistently in the top 400 except last year when it slipped to #401. Its best performance in recent years was in 2012 when it landed on the 348th spot.

The national university was the only Philippine university to enter the top 400 this year.

Three other Philippine universities made it to the overall rankings: Ateneo de Manila University (501-550), De La Salle University (701+) and University of Sto. Tomas (701+).

In the 2016 QS Asian University Rankings, UP ranked 70th while in the 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject, it was 101st in English Language and Literature.

American and British universities yet again dominated the top positions in the world rankings. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was still #1 for the fifth consecutive year. It was followed by Stanford University, Harvard University and the University of Cambridge.

The rankings are released annually by QS and take into account six performance indicators: academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), student-to-faculty ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), international faculty ratio (5 percent) and international student ratio (5 percent). Individual ranking positions are given only to the top 400 universities; the rest are ranked in groups. For 2016-2017, more than 3,800 universities had been assessed and the rankings had been expanded to include 900 of them.
