For the fourth consecutive year, researchers from the University of the Philippines have been included in Asian Scientist 100, an annual list of researchers, academicians, innovators and business leaders from the Asia-Pacific region who have won national or international prizes for scientific research or leadership.
Making it to the list this year are Dr. Artemio Salazar of the Institute of Plant Breeding (UP Los Baños), Dr. Rody Sy of the College of Medicine (UP Manila), Dr. Gay Jane Perez of the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (UP Diliman) and Dr. Charissa Marcaida Ferrera of the Marine Science Institute (UP Diliman).
Salazar received the LEADS Agri Award for Agricultural Research last year in recognition of his lifelong work in corn production. Sy was given the 2018 Dr. Paulo Campos Award for Health Research for his notable contributions to the field of cardiology in the Philippines.
Perez is the first Filipino recipient of the ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women. She was honored in 2018 for investigating how precision agriculture can enhance yields using satellite data.
Ferrera took the 2018 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship for her research on improving water quality in coastal towns. She is the third scientist from the Marine Science Institute to win the fellowship.
The 2019 edition features eight Filipino scientists all told.
Asian Scientist Magazine started to publish the compilation in 2016 to highlight the research excellence of early career and veteran scientists in Asia and “celebrate the success of the region’s best and brightest.” More than 10 UP researchers have now been selected for the list.
