‘Vision’ and ‘global recognition’ yield accolades for two UP researchers

Two UP faculty members will be awarded by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines for outstanding merit in research and development. Dr. Lourdes Ladrido-Ignacio, a professor emeritus at the UP-PGH Department of Psychiatry, was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Geminiano T. De Ocampo Visionary Award for Medical Research. The award is bestowed on clinical researchers who have created the vision for medical research that have blazed and/or pioneered the trail for medical innovations and health research and development. Six young math wizards returned with three silver medals and three bronze medals from the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad held on 13-23 July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The most prestigious pre-college mathematics competition in the world gathered the best and the brightest from 111 countries who competed individually as they solved three difficult, original math problems. Almost a year after winning the 2nd Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning, Dr. Luis Sison of the College of Engineering is now vying for an international award in higher education pedagogy.  Sison was selected to advance in the Reimagine Education competition with his project “HIRIT: Higher education Institutional Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship,” the same entry that secured him the Gawad Pangulo title in December 2015. The entry, based on his MS-level course IE 298, helps students identify and pursue market opportunities that can be addressed by technology. UP Manila prof is world's most prolific editor

Dr. Jose Florencio Lapeña, Jr. of UP Manila is the world’s busiest editor. This was according to Publons, the UK company behind the inaugural Sentinel of Science awards. Lapeña received the award for handling the highest number of manuscripts across all the world’s journals. As this year’s top contributing editor, he will get $100 cash and a $200 credit with Wiley.  Publon created the awards to “honour the expert peer reviewers and editors who stand guard over research quality, and lead the charge for better, faster science.”  Lapeña, who is a professor of otorhinolaryngology at UP Manila, an attending otolaryngologist, aerodigestive tract, and cleft and craniofacial plastic surgeon at the […]

Forty-nine scientists earned the title of UP Scientist for 2016-2018, and six artists and art scholars, the title UP Artist for 2015-2017, for productivity in their fields. The awarding ceremony was held on July 26, 2016 at the NISMED Auditorium, UP Diliman, Quezon City. One of the UP Artists named this year is from UP Los Baños, while the rest are from UP Diliman. Twenty-eight years after its maiden entrance, the Philippines has won its first gold medal – and two at that – in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the most prestigious competition in mathematics for high school students around the world. Placing 17th in the overall ranking, the Philippines also overtook usually strong countries like Bulgaria (#18), Germany (#19) and Romania (#20) and tightened the gap with ASEAN powerhouses like Thailand (#12) and Vietnam (#11). A faculty member of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies of the UP Open University (UPOU) won the Education Researcher of the Year Award at the SM2016/ICT2016 25th International Education and Technology Conference in Hong Kong on 11 April 2016. Asst. It was an evening of firsts at the final round of the UP Gawad Pangulo Choral Competition on March 4. Not only was it the maiden edition of the system-wide contest but it was also the first time that the university had, in the words of President Alfredo Pascual, “a performing arts competition where [it] engaged the whole UP.” What’s more, it was the newly-formed choral ensemble from UP Los Baños, in its inaugural performance at that, which brought home the grand prize. The UP Diliman College of Engineering has another prize under its belt as its own professor Dr. Luis Sison emerged victorious in the 2nd Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning. The final round was held on 18 December 2015 at NISMED in UP Diliman. Sison won for his graduate-level course IE 298 (Technopreneurship) through which he guides students in identifying and pursuing market opportunities that can be addressed by technology. Not only did he improve the course but also made it accessible to other graduate and undergraduate students.
