First UP-Academia Sinica Bilateral Symposium

The UP Office of International Linkages, together with the Institute of Chemistry-Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan, co-organized the first UP-Academia Sinica Bilateral Symposium held last 13-15 December 2016. The purpose of the symposium was to serve as an opportunity for faculty and researchers from both institutions to present their work in order to foster the formation of research collaborations. UP Cebu Phil-LiDAR 2 turns over detailed resource maps to Negros Occidental

The 28 resource maps produced by the UP Cebu Phil-LiDAR 2 project have been handed to the local government units of Negros Occidental on 17 August 2016. They show in detail the agricultural and coastal resources of the province. UP Cebu Phil-LiDAR 2, headed by Dr. Judith Silapan, associate professor of biology, with Brisneve Edullantes as assistant project leader, is part of the bigger Phil-LiDAR 2 project which seeks to use LiDAR data to ensure that the ongoing programs of government agencies complement each other. Dr. M. Jamal Deen is Distinguished University Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair in Information Technology, McMaster University. His research interests are nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, nanotechnology and their emerging applications to health and environmental sciences. He has more than 500 peer-reviewed articles, two textbooks, six patents that have been used in industry, and 13 best paper/poster/presentation awards. UP, NTU and Academia Sinica firm up plans for joint “sandwich programs”
UP is set to offer “sandwich programs” in biology and chemistry at the National Taiwan University (NTU) and Academia Sinica. Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela Concepcion, Professor Flerida Cariño of the Institute of Chemistry (IChem) and Professor Windell Rivera of the Institute of Biology (IB) mapped out the plans with NTU on May 29 and 30, and with Academia Sinica on May 31 in Taiwan. PH and Taiwan strengthen academic ties with UP visit

Since 2014, the Office of International Linkages (OIL) under the Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) has been implementing the Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement (COOPERATE) program for faculty and students. It provides financial support to a UP master’s or PhD student (preferably at the thesis or dissertation level), together with the UP faculty adviser/co-adviser, wishing to conduct a research or creative work in a partner university abroad through advisorship or co-advisorship. Roadshow continues with UP taking the message of academic collaboration and service to Japan

Over the past months, UP has traveled halfway around the world not only to campaign for greater cooperation between UP and foreign universities but also to inspire Filipinos working and studying abroad to come back to the Philippines as mentors and researchers. The mission has brought UP across the Atlantic Ocean in April and May and to the land down under in June, in a series of intimate gatherings with Filipino scholars.
