Twenty-first century teaching needs to engage learners—and digital content can support this end. For UP, drawing on innovative technologies is also “a way for us to market ourselves, to be with other universities in the Philippines and around the world,” said eUP’s hardware & network team leader Rommel Feria during the iTunes U and iBooks Author Training Workshop on 15 July 2015. eUP in cooperation with Apple organized the workshop for the UP faculty as a follow up to the training given earlier to the technical staff of the Information Technology Development Center. Apple’s National Development Executive Joe Sibayan emphasized […]
Maiden run of IP clinic eyes collaboration between scientists and technology transfer officers
To accelerate invention disclosure activities and strengthen technology transfer strategies, the UP System Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) conducted a pilot run of the intellectual property (IP) clinic on 15 July 2015 at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in UP Diliman. The clinic served as a venue for researchers and inventors to seek advice from experts on issues related to IP and technology transfer, as well as help in the course of the invention disclosure and patenting process. In turn, the inputs and concerns shared by the researchers are expected to help the TTOs in designing recommendations […]
UP Diliman geologists bring fossil conference to the Philippines

Calcareous nannoplankton or nannofossils are part of a group of single-celled plant-like organisms called phytoplankton, which are used to determine the ages of rocks useful in oil and gas exploration, the geologic history of oceans, and in climate change research. Because these planktonic organisms subsist in tropical marine environments, what better way for fossil experts to update themselves on developments in the field than to hold a conference in one of the most beautiful beaches in the world? From 7 to 16 March 2015, seventy-nine scientists from 23 countries gathered at South Palms Resort in the powdery shores of Panglao, Bohol for the 15th Conference of […]

How UP education helps VP Concepcion carry out the mission, vision and passion of her life

On 25 June 2015, Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela Concepcion spoke before the graduates of the University of the Philippines Baguio. Her words of advice and reflection drew from a well of memories – from that child captivated by the natural beauty of Baguio on family holidays, to the student who survived UP during the turbulent Martial Law years, and finally to the academic whose character was shaped not only by the rigors of science but also by the freedom offered by the arts and humanities. KEYNOTE SPEECH AT THE 2015 COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES OF UP BAGUIO Gisela P. Concepcion 25 June 2015 Greetings to everyone! […]

For the first time, physicists are using a statistical approach to process complex light patterns

Everybody uses digital cameras to take a picture of a particular subject or, once in a while, to take a selfie. When we take pictures, we are measuring the intensity of light from the surface of our subject. There is, however, another property called the phase or wavefront of light which is much more sensitive to the state of the subject we are imaging. Modern technologies are ubiquitous, for example, in the opto-electronic and biomedical research fields. Modern instrumentation systems require faster and more precise evaluation tools. Optical evaluation methods, particularly those that are wavefront-based are in great demand. Developing […]
UP is on a par with the best universities in 8 subjects, according to global rankings

The University of the Philippines (UP) makes it to the top 100 universities in the world in the area of development studies. It is one of only four ASEAN universities which were included in that list. UP also ranks highly in seven other subjects, thereby making it an elite institution according to the 2015 QS Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject. More than 3,000 universities were evaluated from which only 894 representatives from 60 countries were eventually ranked. “To be elite means a lot,” says Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela Concepcion. “[In a span of one year], we moved from one […]
