For the first time, the Philippines played host to the Asian Conference on Ultrafast Phenomena. The 9th edition of the conference was held from 22 to 24 February 2016 at the National Institute of Physics in UP Diliman. It was supported by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs through the Office of International Linkages. With 23 plenary talks and a poster session, the gathering allowed scientists and engineers to update each other on the latest advances in ultrafast optics and their various applications. OVPAA symposium to showcase creative work and research accomplishments

Researchers from different UP constituent units will present their creative work and research outputs in a symposium to be convened by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) on March 1 and 2. UP biologists discover new giant flower found only in the Philippines

A new species of Rafflesia, with an average diameter of 9.73 centimeters has been discovered by a team of UP biologists near the Pantabangan Masiway Hydroelectric Power Plant (PMHEP) in Nueva Ecjia. This amazing new discovery now holds the world record of being the smallest among giant flowers. Named Rafflesia consueloae, this new species has been published in the open access journal Phytokeys last (date of publication). About 800 new Professorial Chair Awards and Faculty Grant Awards will be available to all academic units of the University of the Philippines starting this year. This was announced by UP President Alfredo E. The UP Diliman College of Engineering has another prize under its belt as its own professor Dr. Luis Sison emerged victorious in the 2nd Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning. The final round was held on 18 December 2015 at NISMED in UP Diliman. Sison won for his graduate-level course IE 298 (Technopreneurship) through which he guides students in identifying and pursuing market opportunities that can be addressed by technology. Faculty members called to register in Google Scholar to update list of top Philippine scientists
In a memorandum issued recently, Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela P. Concepcion encouraged faculty members to register and create their Google Scholar profile “so that the current list of UP scientists with citations could be updated and corrected in future editions of the Cybermetrics Lab ranking.” Last month, Cybermetrics Lab has announced the list of top 250 scientists in Philippine institutions. Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela P. Concepcion is among the 44 new Fellows elected to The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The election took place at the Academy’s 26th General Meeting in Vienna, Austria on 19 November 2015.
