“We seek to show the life within the walls of UP College of Fine Arts (CFA), and the life that we wish to breathe into Filipino society as designers.” This was the idea behind PULSO, the undergraduate thesis exhibit of this year’s CFA graduating class. Held from 29 May to 1 June 2016 at Pineapple Lab in Makati City, PULSO showcased the works of the students from the visual communication and industrial design programs. It was attended by CFA faculty members as well as by friends and families of the students. Industry professionals also came, including Melvin Mangada, managing partner and chief creative officer of advertising […]
PAASE supports the resumption of Bt talong development
The development of Bt talong, a technology that can increase productivity in areas affected by fruit and shoot borers (FSB) but without the health risks posed by chemical pesticides, is both “a desirable and an urgent imperative.” This was the position made by the Philippine American Academy of Science & Engineering (PAASE) in light of the decision of the Supreme Court to prohibit the field testing of Bt talong. PAASE is an organization of Philippine- and foreign-based scientists and engineers who support national inclusive growth and development through innovation in science and technology. According to PAASE: “Bt talong, developed through biotechnology, unburdened by the problems of conventional breeding, […]

UP celebrates the contributions of its scientists and artists in a system-wide festival

The landmark UP Knowledge Festival represented, in the words of President Alfredo Pascual, “an outpouring of love and service to our people.” Held from April 17 to 19 at Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, the gathering dubbed “Utak at Puso para sa Bayan” brought together scientists and artists, researchers and creators, to forge stronger collaborations and mutual learning and sharing. “The theme is only appropriate because it is only through the marriage between the two that we can harness the full potential of our research and creative work,” says the president. He adds: “Gone are the days when research and […]
UP calls on presidential candidates to invest on knowledge capital
“Higher level education is the key to inclusive growth,” says UP President Pascual. The country can produce the high-level human resource it needs to catch up with its neighbors if the next government adopts the right set of policies. This was the gist of a “think paper” on “Knowledge-Based Development and Governance” presented by the University of the Philippines to all the presidential candidates for their consideration. According to UP President Alfredo E. Pascual, the study—which he calls “a road map to inclusive growth”—can form the basis for a comprehensive review of Philippine educational and human resource development policy, particularly […]
Researchers ‘fascinated’ by works outside their fields

The OVPAA Symposium for CWRG and ECWRG Recipients last March 1 and 2 was nothing less than a medley of specializations. From malaria detection and allopurinol to terahertz emissions and Ruthenium complexes, and from begonias and red frog crabs to acts of plagiarism and territorial disputes, the wide range of topics surely took the participants on an enjoyable ride of discovery. Where else would one find, under one roof, scholars in the technical fields interacting with their artistic counterparts? The natural scientists were curious about Jose Rizal’s portrayal in films, Shakespeare’s presence in Philippine literature, and the writing of the Palawan epic Dumaracol. The geologist […]

The winning group was the Makiling Chamber Singers. Created to support long-time choristers in reviving their passion for choral singing and performing on […]
UP names top scientists based on h-index and citation count
Dr. Antonio Dans of the College of Medicine in UP Manila and Dr. Arnel Salvador of the National Institute of Physics in UP Diliman have the most number of citations and the highest h-index values in UP. This is according to the latest rankings generated by UP for its own pool of scientists and researchers as of 4 March 2016. A total of 111 scholars were in the two lists that included those with at least 100 citations and an h-index value of 5 or higher. The figures were based on their Google Scholar profiles. Early in December 2015, Vice President for Academic Affairs […]
