UP regains title as one of world’s top 400 universities

The University of the Philippines has reappeared in the top 400 universities in the world. In the list published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on 6 September, UP placed 374th alongside Aalborg University and the University of Colorado, Denver. UP has been consistently in the top 400 except last year when it slipped to #401. Its best performance in recent years was in 2012 when it landed on the 348th spot. The national university was the only Philippine university to enter the top 400 this year. UP Artists and Scientists for 2015-2017 named

Forty-nine scientists earned the title of UP Scientist for 2016-2018, and six artists and art scholars, the title UP Artist for 2015-2017, for productivity in their fields. The awarding ceremony was held on July 26, 2016 at the NISMED Auditorium, UP Diliman, Quezon City. One of the UP Artists named this year is from UP Los Baños, while the rest are from UP Diliman. Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela P. Concepcion was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) as this year’s outstanding science administrator. The University of the Philippines Diliman, through UP Biology was the recipient of a donation of 1000 copies of a book through the Diliman Science Research Foundation (DSRF), chaired by the College of Science Dean Jose Maria P. UP remains in top 100 universities in Asia

UP is still the number one university in the Philippines, placing 70th in the 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings. With an overall score of 58.4 out of 100, it received the highest points in employer reputation (87.9), academic reputation (74.8) and faculty-student ratio (69.2). Other indicators used by QS were citations per paper, papers per faculty, staff with PhD, proportions of international faculty and international students, and proportions of inbound and outbound exchange students. Since 2014, the Office of International Linkages (OIL) under the Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) has been implementing the Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement (COOPERATE) program for faculty and students. It provides financial support to a UP master’s or PhD student (preferably at the thesis or dissertation level), together with the UP faculty adviser/co-adviser, wishing to conduct a research or creative work in a partner university abroad through advisorship or co-advisorship.
