The Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) of UP Manila, in partnership with the National Telehealth Center (NTHC), hosted the web-based seminar “Practical Tips for Doctors and Students for Creating a Mobile Health/Telemedicine Startup“ on 9 May 2017 with Dr. Milton Chen as resource person. Putri Anak is a new Komedya produced by the UP College of Music and the UP Center for International Studies that explores Filipino pre-colonial and colonial heritage through oral literature, music and the San Dionisio Komedya performance tradition. Named after the heroine around whom the three-act play revolves, it features a composite text from a narrative common among Southeast Asian cultures–the celestial maiden, a half-woman, half-bird being who was deceived by a mortal. The UP Board of Regents (BOR) in its 1321st meeting on 27 October 2016 has given the green light to increase and extend the involvement of retired professors and professors emeriti in teaching, mentoring, research, creative work and administrative work in the university. With this approval, retired professors and professors emeriti may already serve as co-advisers, readers or panel members for master’s theses and PhD dissertations, and hold positions as professorial administrators and professorial K to 12 teacher trainers. They may also be appointed professorial researchers of UP-funded programs such as OVPAA’s Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Program or of externally funded projects. The […]

Almost a year after winning the 2nd Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning, Dr. Luis Sison of the College of Engineering is now vying for an international award in higher education pedagogy.  Sison was selected to advance in the Reimagine Education competition with his project “HIRIT: Higher education Institutional Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship,” the same entry that secured him the Gawad Pangulo title in December 2015. The entry, based on his MS-level course IE 298, helps students identify and pursue market opportunities that can be addressed by technology. The BCBMTP conference kicked off on October 16 with opening remarks from Governor Edgar Chatto of Bohol and DENR undersecretary Isabelo Montejo.  After welcoming the participants to Bohol, everyone was treated to a medley of songs from the Loboc Children’s Choir.  On October 17, the morning plenary lectures began with talks from Dr. Baltgazar Aguda of the Philippine Genome Center and Dr. Hiroyuki Ogata of Kyoto University.  Dr. Aguda’s talk focused on ecosystem stability, biodiversity, and genomics.  He highlighted the importance of food webs and keystone species and discussed how an ecological community can have overlapping genomes as a result […]

At the opening dinner of the First International Conference on Biodiversity & Chemical Biology of Marine and Terrestrial Life in the Philippine Region on 16 October, newly appointed secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Gina Lopez and Atty. Edgardo Chato, governor of Bohol, emphasized the value of science-based decisions when they appealed to researchers to help in the conservation and development of marine biodiversity in the Philippines. UP Manila prof is world's most prolific editor

Dr. Jose Florencio Lapeña, Jr. of UP Manila is the world’s busiest editor. This was according to Publons, the UK company behind the inaugural Sentinel of Science awards. Lapeña received the award for handling the highest number of manuscripts across all the world’s journals. Latest invention disclosure awardees come from UP Visayas

Two faculty members from the UP Visayas recently qualified for the Invention Disclosure Incentive, a monetary award launched last year to enlarge and enhance the University’s intellectual property portfolio. At the Invention Disclosure Clinic held on 7 September 2016 in UP Visayas, Prof. Ernestina Peralta reported her research on producing oyster powder while Prof. Ernesto del Rosario described his work on the fish feeder, both by means of confidential forms. Their works were chosen by the Executive Committee of the UP System Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) for their inventiveness, industrial application and commercial potential.
