UP is still the number one university in the Philippines, placing 70th in the 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings. With an overall score of 58.4 out of 100, it received the highest points in employer reputation (87.9), academic reputation (74.8) and faculty-student ratio (69.2). Other indicators used by QS were citations per paper, papers per faculty, staff with PhD, proportions of international faculty and international students, and proportions of inbound and outbound exchange students. UP is set to offer “sandwich programs” in biology and chemistry at the National Taiwan University (NTU) and Academia Sinica. Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela Concepcion, Professor Flerida Cariño of the Institute of Chemistry (IChem) and Professor Windell Rivera of the Institute of Biology (IB) mapped out the plans with NTU on May 29 and 30, and with Academia Sinica on May 31 in Taiwan. Since 2014, the Office of International Linkages (OIL) under the Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) has been implementing the Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement (COOPERATE) program for faculty and students. It provides financial support to a UP master’s or PhD student (preferably at the thesis or dissertation level), together with the UP faculty adviser/co-adviser, wishing to conduct a research or creative work in a partner university abroad through advisorship or co-advisorship. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs announces the Call for Proposals for the Cycle 8 of the Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR) Program. Researchers are invited to submit full proposals (not capsule proposals) that represent the niches of their respective constituent universities (CUs) in creative or research work. PAASE supports the resumption of Bt talong development

The development of Bt talong, a technology that can increase productivity in areas affected by fruit and shoot borers (FSB) but without the health risks posed by chemical pesticides, is both “a desirable and an urgent imperative.”  This was the position made by the Philippine American Academy of Science & Engineering (PAASE) in light of the decision of the Supreme Court to prohibit the field testing of Bt talong.  PAASE is an organization of Philippine- and foreign-based scientists and engineers who support national inclusive growth and development through innovation in science and technology. The UP College of Nursing (UPCN) has been redesignated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Leadership in Nursing Development for another four years. As a collaborating center from 2016 to 2020, the college seeks to assist the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office  in strengthening integrated multi-profession education by developing curriculum and teaching education standards in nursing.
