National Scientist Lourdes Cruz is most cited researcher from UP

National Scientist and UP Professor Emeritus Lourdes Cruz has the most number of publications with the highest impact among UP researchers. This was according to the Webometrics Ranking of Scientists in Philippine Institutions released in January 2017. The list is a BETA ranking based on the researcher’s presence in the Google Scholar Citations database. It includes the top 453 scholars in the Philippines–267 of them from UP–with h-indices of at least five. The researchers were “ranked first by h-index in decreasing order then, [in case of a tie], by the total number of citations as a secondary criteria.” For this third edition, […]

13th APRU Multi-Hazards Symposium call for abstracts and student paper competition

The 13th APRU Multi-Hazards Symposium 2017, to be held on 28-29 August 2017 at Peking University, will concentrate on how to combine governance and state-of-the-art science and technology for more efficient disaster risk reduction. The Pacific Rim is never short of earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and bush fires, and the historic disaster events indicated that government could and should play a more important role in coping with these natural hazards. Association of academia with governance on public education, infrastructure construction, disaster management, emergency rescue and hazard recovery will be the next “hot” point in the field of disaster […]

Granular Matter, 19 (2): 39, 9 pages, May 2017. Catchy title of research: Explanation of granular material segregation inspired by asteroids and artificial satellites At an appropriate rotational speed, a mixture of large and small grains inside a rotating horizontal cylindrical container first radially segregate, such that the larger grains go to the periphery and the smaller grains form the core. Then axial segregation occurs, such that the sheath made of […]

UP’s discovery of the rare giant shipworm and the mystery it solved

For centuries, the giant shipworm remained an enigmatic bivalve species–until scientists, including those from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, recently found a group of it burrowed in the black marine sediments of Sultan Kudarat, southern Philippines. Named Kuphus polythalamia, the rare animal belongs to the common wood-boring, wood-feeding bivalve family Teredinidae. The family is composed of clams with long, soft bodies such as the tamiloks of Palawan and Aklan. But the giant shipworm stands out from the rest of its kind. First of all, it has an unusual body that may grow up to 155 cm in length […]
