About 800 new Professorial Chair Awards and Faculty Grant Awards will be available to all academic units of the University of the Philippines starting this year.
This was announced by UP President Alfredo E. Pascual on 18 January to the chancellors and officials of the UP Diliman, UP Manila, UP Los Banos, UP Open University, UP Visayas, UP College Cebu, UP Visayas, UP Baguio, and UP Mindanao with the launching of the One UP Professorial Chair Awards and the One UP Faculty Grant Awards. The awards have a funding allocation of P100 million per year from the earnings of the University, as approved by the Board of Regents.
Under the award system, a Professorial Chair awardee will receive P120,000 annually for three years, while a Faculty Grant awardee will receive P96,000 annually for three years as well. The first round of awards will be for the period from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.
The One UP Professorial Chair and Faculty Grant Awards are intended to give recognition and incentive to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding performance during the past three years in two out of three work areas of the faculty: teaching, research/creative work, and public service. These awards are renewable, subject to the evaluation of performance of the awardee during the period of the previous award.
According to Pascual, “the creation of the One UP Professorial Chairs and Faculty Grant Awards is part of my strategy to encourage and incentivize faculty members who produce new knowledge and innovation for the country, deliver quality teaching and mentoring to students, and undertake public service for local communities and the nation.”
“Through prudent financial management and active mobilization of funds, including income generation from UP’s land assets, we are now able to allocate the resources needed not only for faculty promotion but also for increasing and enhancing the available awards to recognize the outstanding performance of our faculty,” added Pascual.
Under Republic Act 9500 or the UP Charter of 2008, UP is mandated to perform its unique and distinctive leadership in higher education and development. The members of the UP faculty are key to the pursuit of this mandate.
