The 2019 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Regional Rankings for Asia released yesterday, October 24th, showed improved results for the University of the Philippines.
Jumping three places from last year’s ranking, the national university placed 72nd among 503 institutions and was among the top 15 percent of the best Asian universities.
UP’s strength was still employer reputation as it retained its 33rd position regionally. Institutions providing the best professionals were listed according to a survey that collected over 43,000 responses from employers around the world. Employer reputation made up 20 percent of the total score.
Furthermore, UP continued to improve in faculty-student ratio, an indirect indicator of high-quality teaching and 10 percent of the total score. UP was 98th in faculty-student ratio.
The University recorded a slide in academic reputation but was still strong at 54th. A survey with over 83,000 responses from academics around the world established the best institutions in terms of research. Academic reputation accounted for 30 percent of the overall score.

This edition saw the appearance of the international research network indicator, also 10 percent of the total score, to assess the degree of international openness in terms of research collaboration. For this indicator, UP placed 56th in Asia.
Other indicators used by QS to obtain data for ranking were staff with PhD, citations per paper, papers per faculty, international faculty, international students, inbound exchange students and outbound exchange students. UP slipped some notches in all seven measures, landing in 301+ positions.

Eight Philippine institutions were included in the list but only UP reached the top 100.
UP’s best showing in the QS regional rankings was in 2014/2015 when it was ranked 63rd.
In the global rankings published by analytics company QS this June, UP was 384th among the 1,011 institutions from 85 countries that were ranked.
