UP convenes 1st Philippine Koreanist Congress to strengthen academic, cultural ties

Over the past decade, Korean studies in the Philippines has grown in scope as an academic discipline. This can be attributed to two factors. First, there are more local institutions now that offer Korea-related courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. Second, more Filipino students go to Korea to pursue higher degrees and they return to the Philippines with greater knowledge of Korea. In which subject areas did UP publish more?

Every year, UP generates more international journal articles and scholarly books and book chapters across fields of study. But which subject areas have more publications than others? According to Scopus, almost half of UP’s publications in indexed scientific journals, books and conference proceedings in the last 100 years were in agriculture and biological sciences, and medicine. Of the 10,835 publications of UP from 1911 to 10 May 2018, 24.5 percent were research papers in agriculture and biological sciences while 23.5 percent were related to medicine. A group of graduate students from the MA Asian Studies program of UP Diliman is in Korea for the eight-day Korea Study Tour organized by the UP Korea Research Center (KRC), a unit under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The tour aims to provide students with an opportunity to visit Korean universities to motivate them to pursue research works on Korea as well as undertake further graduate studies in the country. UP rises to top 50% of ranked universities from emerging economies

London-based publication Times Higher Education (THE) has placed the University of the Philippines in the top 50 percent of the 2018 Emerging Economies Universities Rankings. UP has been ranked 166th, a massive leap from its 201st-250th position among 300 universities in 2017. It is the only Philippine university in this year’s list which includes 378 universities from 42 countries. The rankings consider only institutions from countries classified by FTSE as advanced emerging, secondary emerging or frontier markets. Below are the guidelines released by the UP Office of Admissions (OA) for UPCAT appeals and pending cases. OA is is still waiting for the complete list of cut-offs for appeals from the different constituent universities. These should be received by Friday, 11 May 2018. The list will be posted at the OA. On 16 April 2018, Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria Cynthia Rose Banzon Bautista issued a memorandum to the chancellors, vice chancellors, deans, directors, department chairs, faculty and staff to “provide additional information to facilitate a better understanding of the UPCAT situation”.
