UP's pioneer articles in int'l journals: 1911 to 1920

The University of the Philippines is a major producer of scientific articles in the country. In the last 18 years alone, UP published over 7000 articles in prestigious journals, all refereed. A survey of Scopus, the biggest database of peer-reviewed literature, reveals that during its initial years, UP was able to publish in what are now some of the world’s longest running international journals. Furthermore, UP’s submissions came from prominent practitioners and researchers in the Philippines. American scholars as authors UP’s first international journal article “Practical Experiences with Beriberi and Unpolished Rice in the Philippines” made an appearance in the Journal […]

British Council, CHED, DOST open new opportunities under the Newton Agham Programme

The British Council, the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of Science and Technology are pleased to announce a new opportunity under the Newton Agham Programme. 1 . Newton Institutional Links Newton Institutional Links aims to build UK-partner country research and innovation collaborations centred on shared research and innovation challenges which have direct relevance to social welfare and economic development. This programme is designed to establish links beyond the level of the individual researcher and innovation practitioner, opening up opportunities for more sustainable, solution-oriented collaborations between academic groups as well as with the private and third sector (e.g. SMEs, NGOs, […]

On UPCAT 2018

On 16 April 2018, Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria Cynthia Rose Banzon Bautista issued a memorandum to the chancellors, vice chancellors, deans, directors, department chairs, faculty and staff to “provide additional information to facilitate a better understanding of the UPCAT situation”. 2018 UP KRC Korea Essay Contest

Since Korea and the Philippines established diplomatic relations in 1949, the two countries have been nurturing ties to build a closer relationship. Last decade, a significant milestone was reached when Korea became the top source of foreign tourists visiting the Philippines. The Filipino community in Korea has also been steadily expanding. The Korean popular culture also invaded the archipelago and Korean products are now easily available in the corners of the country’s major shopping malls. In spite of these positive developments, there is often this general impression that the Philippines-Korea relations have somehow been limited to the domains of tourism […]

Fig. 1. The unfolded protein response (UPR) activates pathways dedicated to cell survival and cell death. In the presence of aberrations, HSP90 dissociates from PERK that then phosphorylates eIF2α to attenuate protein translation. Likewise, it activates ATF4 that induces the transcription of CHOP – an apoptotic signal, and miR-211 that controls it. miR-211 acts as a molecular switch, which downregulates during persistent stress, allowing CHOP to accumulate and mediate apoptosis. On the other hand, unfolded proteins activate IRE1 that upon autophosphorylation induces splicing of Xbp1, which assists protein folding and degradation.

Many disease of epidemiologic significance, such as infectious and non-communicable diseases, are almost always studied separately. However, the tissues affected in all of these diseases — be it neuronal, muscular, epithelial or connective – all have one thing in common: they all have an endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Surprisingly, this organelle is the principal actor in disease, since it acts to […]

Richard Espiritu Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering College of Engineering UP Diliman Degradation of Radiation Grafted Anion Exchange Membranes Tethered with Different Amine Functional Groups Via Removal of Vinylbenzyl Trimethylammonium Hydroxide. Journal of Power Sources, 375: 373-386, 31 January 2018. The chemical stability of anion exchange membranes (AEM), particularly at high operating temperatures, poses a critical challenge that limits the wide scale use of alkaline fuel cells. Thus, a fundamental understanding of the chemical stability of anion exchange membranes is required to adequately design robust solid-state anion exchange membrane for electrolysers and fuel cells. Previously, we have reported the […]
