Mango seed starch was extracted from the seed kernels of ‘Carabao’ mango (Mangifera indica L.) and converted to carboxymethylated starch.

Louelle Sheryl V. Go, Veronica C. Sabularse, Florinia E. Merca and Mary Ann O. Torio Institute of Chemistry College of Arts and Sciences UP Los Baños Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Carboxymethylated Starch from Carabao Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Seed. Philippine Agricultural Scientist, 98 (2): 25-36, June 2015.   Mango seed kernel contains a relatively large amount of starch.  Starch was isolated from ‘Carabao’ mango (Mangifera indica L.) seeds and converted to carboxymethyl starch (CMS).  The physical, chemical and functional properties of mango seed starch (MSS) and CMS were different.  Conversion of MSS to CMS changed the characteristics of the native starch.  […]

Special General Talk on Hilbert’s Sixth Problem

On the occasion of the publication of his most general solution to the Navier-Stokes equation (2016), a generalization of the existence proof of a solution by construction in 2011, Dr. Amador Muriel of the CUNY Graduate Program in Mathematics will discuss the implication of the completion of Hilbert’s Sixth Problem.  The talk will be on Thursday, 7 April 2016, at 4 p.m. at the Math Building Conference Room, UP Diliman. It will be a non-technical talk for the general audience, emphasizing history. A small group of researchers will be proposed to continue the program started by Ludwig Boltzmann, Vienna,  on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, via Paul […]

2016 Call for Applications: USAID STRIDE Prototype Research and Innovation Grants (SPRIG)

The Science, Technology, Research, and Innovation for Development (STRIDE) Program is a 5-year, PhP1.3 billion initiative by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that aims to strengthen applied research activity in Philippine universities and industries. It is the flagship program of USAID/Philippines under the Partnership for Growth, a signature initiative of the U.S. government to promote inclusive economic growth.USAID, through its STRIDE program, will work closely with Philippine academic institutions and industries to transform their capacity to produce research, graduates, and innovation partnerships to accelerate development in the country. In line with these goals, USAID will be awarding grants under […]

Call for Papers: 7th Biennial Conference on Korean Studies

The Korean Studies Association of Southeast Asia invites papers for presentation at its 7th Biennial International Conference to be hosted by the University of the Philippines, in collaboration with the Academy of Korean Studies, at Novotel Manila, Araneta Center, Quezon City, Philippines and at the UP Diliman campus on 28-30 September 2016. USAID STRIDE exhibits UP research projects

USAID STRIDE exhibits UP research projects

Seven UP projects were part of the research showcase organized by the United States Agency for International Development–Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for Development (USAID STRIDE) Program on 10 March 2016 at the Peninsula Manila in Makati. With the theme “Attracting Young Graduates into Careers in Science, Technology and Innovation,” the exhibit sought to promote the research capabilities and innovations of scientists and engineers from the different universities in the Philippines. Participants included the USAID STRIDE proponents, business sector, media, US-affiliated organizations and students. The projects from UP represented different fields. Dr. Agapita Salces from the UP Los Baños Animal and Dairy Science Cluster developed a sustainable breed […]

Study predicts dengue mosquito abundance in PH schools

With the rise of dengue cases especially among children, a local study has pioneered in the development of a statistical model that readily predicts the threat of dengue outbreaks in public elementary and high schools in the Philippines. Supported by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the “School-based Mosquito Abundance Model (SMAM)” study offers a predictive model based on actual data estimating the mosquito density in schools without having to do active vector surveillance. Led by Dr. Lilian A. De Las Llagas of the College of Public Health, UP […]

UP calls on presidential candidates to invest on knowledge capital

“Higher level education is the key to inclusive growth,” says UP President Pascual. The country can produce the high-level human resource it needs to catch up with its neighbors if the next government adopts the right set of policies. This was the gist of a “think paper” on “Knowledge-Based Development and Governance” presented by the University of the Philippines to all the presidential candidates for their consideration. According to UP President Alfredo E. Pascual, the study—which he calls “a road map to inclusive growth”—can form the basis for a comprehensive review of Philippine educational and human resource development policy, particularly […]

Researchers ‘fascinated’ by works outside their fields

Researchers 'fascinated' by works outside their fields

The OVPAA Symposium for CWRG and ECWRG Recipients last March 1 and 2 was nothing less than a medley of specializations. From malaria detection and allopurinol to terahertz emissions and Ruthenium complexes, and from begonias and red frog crabs to acts of plagiarism and territorial disputes, the wide range of topics surely took the participants on an enjoyable ride of discovery. Where else would one find, under one roof, scholars in the technical fields interacting with their artistic counterparts? The natural scientists were curious about Jose Rizal’s portrayal in films, Shakespeare’s presence in Philippine literature, and the writing of the Palawan epic Dumaracol. The geologist […]
