National Artist Francisco Feliciano, 73 On the same day the monstrous rains of Typhoon “Mario” submerged Metro Manila, conductor-composer and National Artist for Music Francisco Feliciano quietly passed away after a long battle with cancer, which has reached stage 4. He was 73. Earlier, the UP College of Music paid tribute to Feliciano (along with coartist Ramon Santos) with a concert showcasing his works. His remains will be at the Holy Angels Memorial in Morong, Rizal, until early Sunday and will be moved to Loyola Commonwealth Sunday until Tuesday. UP Diliman hosts second OVPAA research symposium
The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) successfully convened the 2014 OVPAA Research Symposium. This was held last December 1 and 2, 2014 at the Intel Center for Science Innovation Auditorium, National Institute of Physics, UP Diliman. The symposium featured the results of projects under the Emerging Inter-Disciplinary Research (EIDR), the Balik PhD and the Emerging Science and Technology Research (ESTR) programs. UPLB BS Biology Program gets AUN-QA Standard Accreditation
UPLB’s BS Biology program under the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), has received certification as an accredited program under the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) System on November 5, 2014. The date of effectivity is from Feb. 18, 2014 to Feb. 17, 2018.The accreditation signifies that the UPLB BS Biology curriculum adheres to international academic standards, and it is at par with biology programs from other leading ASEAN universities within the network. Kenneth Roquid and Jolo Ferrer from the Disease Molecular Biology and Epigenetics Laboratory (DMBEL) were 2 of 38 (out of some 1200 posters) conferred the Sigma-Aldrich Best Poster Award at the 26th Intern ational Conference of the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Gangnam, Seoul, Korea held October 21-23, 2014. UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas inaugurated
On 22 October 2014 the University of the Philippines Manila inaugurated its Museum of a History of Ideas (UPM-MHI, also called UP Manila Museum). The museum celebrates the contributions of the University to the critical imagination that shaped the Philippines as a nation in the early 20th century. The museum is one of UP’s centennial projects and was spearheaded by Sen. Edgardo Angara. The curator, Marian Pastor Roces, explained that the museum wants to highlight the role of UP in shaping the intellectual development and cultural imagination of the nation. They limited the years of focus, only those from 1910-1929.
